Don’t Be Afraid to Admit Your Vision Difficulties!

Posted by Dr Boothe on August 8, 2011

People usually say that I am a very responsible person. I like to make sure my parents live comfortably and for all my life I have been afraid to disappoint them. I had good eyesight until my fifth grade. There was an accident - I fell and displaced the thoracic vertebrae. For three months I lay without getting up and watched TV. I don’t know if there is a connection but since my vision got worse. I was afraid to tell about my vision problems to my parents. Nobody in my family has ever worn glasses and I didn’t want to used them. My vision deteriorated and at high school I had -2 vision. I decided to buy contacts lenses because I couldn’t distinguish my friends faces from strangers when walking on the street. I still felt ashamed to admit it to my parents because I thought that it would unsettle them. I entered university and by then I had -4 myopia. Maybe I would have never done Lasik if my mother and I didn’t go to the pool together. I went to swim and when I returned my mom was holding the container of the lenses. I told her about my vision problems. She and my father were not angry or disappointed at all. The next morning my father took me to Boothe Eye Care & Laser Center.

At Boothe’s Center I had different eyes exams and after all of them were completed Dr. Boothe said that I was a good candidate for a Lasik procedure. I consulted with my dad who agreed I should undergo laser eye surgery as soon as possible. We decided to do it on the same day. I was amazed when I got up after the quick surgery and I was able to see everything!

Already five months have passed and I have very good vision. I am very glad that when I was at a routine followup appointment with Dr. Boothe he said that my eyesight stabilized.

In a couple of months I’m getting married and I am very grateful to Dr. Boothe for helping me get back my vision.

The Benefits of Doing Wavefront Lasik By Dr. BootHe

Posted by Dr Boothe on July 14, 2011

Traditional eye surgeries have now been replaced by Lasik surgeries to a great extent. Wavefront LASIK is also known as custom LASIK or wavefront LASIK in which 3-dimensional images of the cornea are processed. This mapping will help Dr. Boothe in the re-shaping of the cornea using the laser machine. The measurements provided by the wavefront system are extremely precise and individualized which is not possible in the case of traditional LASIK eye procedures, or when wearing spectacles or contact lenses. You should consult a doctor who is considered qualified based on the FDA guidelines before considering Wavefront LASIK as an option to correct refractive errors.

In custom LASIK, a wavefront sensor is used for operating on the eye. The computer is controlling the laser in a typical custom LASIK procedure, therefore you can achieve a perfect and accurate cornea with the help of this advanced technology. A Wavefront LASIK procedure provides better eyesight than normally to patients. In wavefront-based LASIK, the aberrometer will measure all aberrations (including high order aberrations). These optical errors of the eyes are then removed all at once using the laser device. Dr. Boothe is considered one of the country’s top surgeons for performing this kind of surgeries because in order to get more accurate results from wavefront LASIK, the surgeon should have a lot of expertise and experience in handling such surgeries.

Wavefront LASIK can help you to attain a vision of 20/20 or better, usually outdoing other eye procedures. This surgical procedure has fewer complications associated with night vision as it is in the case of other LASIK procedures. Wavefront LASIK is also helpful in correcting vision problems of previous refractive surgeries such as conventional LASIK or PRK. Contrast sensitivity of patients will improve after the custom LASIK procedure. Large pupils of the eyes can also be corrected using this technology.

People who have thin corneas are not considered as good candidates of LASIK eye procedures. But with the help of a wavefront LASIK eye procedure, they can also obtain better vision. The reason is that wavefront LASIK is extremely precise in removing tissues from the cornea in comparison with conventional LASIK procedure. People who have higher prescriptions also are not a good fit for traditional LASIK surgery, but can be treated using wavefront technology. With wavefront LASIK, there is a very small chance for laser inaccuracies as the wavefront map received from the system is directly transferred into the excimer laser that performs the surgery. The wavefront map serves as the guide for the surgery.

About 98% of wavefront LASIK patients are achieving 20/20 vision or better. With this procedure, the chance of losing quality of vision is very rare. If you are a patient, Dr. Boothe will check your medical history which includes previous laser eye treatments. After verifying all the prescriptions of the eye for the last year, he will perform the surgery. Dr. Boothe and his Laser Center are providing wavefront LASIK eye procedures which are approved by the FDA. He is offering the systems of LADARVision® Custom Cornea® System by Alcon and CustomVue® by VISX for the custom LASIK procedure.

How to determine if you are a candidate for LASIK?

LASIK is the perfect procedure for those who look for aneffective and safe treatment for refractive errors. LASIK eye surgery is a painless procedure and most of patients with refractive errors will benefit from having this procedure. LASIK eye procedure is performed on a delicate part of the eyes. Therefore, it is important to determine the right candidate for the procedure. Potential candidates for the surgery should understand the benefits as well as the complications associated with the procedure, patients also have to know the importance of testing to determine who is the right candidate and the patient should have realistic expectations associated with the result of the procedure.

Majority of the people who would like to have the LASIK procedure are the right candidates, but some patients cannot meet certain criteria for performing a successful LASIK eye surgery. Patients who are considering LASIK eye procedure have to undergo a complete eye checkup with the help of Dr. William Boothe of Boothe Laser Center and his assistants. Initial checkup includes complete evaluation of the refraction error and the medical history of the patient. After obtaining the results of eye tests performed, Dr. Boothe will decide whether the patient is a good candidate for the procedure or not. Some alternative treatments may be offered at that time.

First of all, the patients should be of 18 years old or above to become eligible for the LASIK procedure. The eyes should be mature enough to perform the procedure. Stability of vision is required for performing LASIK. Visual stability means that your prescription should be the same for a minimum of one year, or even two years if possible. Patients under 25 years of age or people who are using certain medications often have flexible prescriptions. You should not have eye injuries or infections such as eye herpes, dry eyes, eye inflammation, retinal diseases or corneal diseases which may pose additional complications and risks.

Those who would like to undergo LASIK eye procedure should be free from autoimmune disorders such as multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis and lupus. Autoimmune disorders will affect negatively the healing of the wounds. The cornea of the patient should not be abnormal or with scars. Some of the causes of abnormal or scarred corneas are aging, trauma or disease. Keratoconus is a disorder that will affect the shape of the cornea abnormally with round cone shaped cornea. Some of the causes of Keratoconus are hereditary abnormalities and eye injury. Eye diseases like retinopathy, vernal keratoconjuctivitis and retinitis pigmentosa can also cause keratoconus disorder. Systemic diseases like Down’s syndrome, Addison’s disease, Leber’s congenital amaurosis, osteogenesis imperfecta and Ehlers-Danlos syndrome can also cause Keratoconus.

LASIK eye surgery at Boothe Eyecare should not be performed on pregnant or nursing women as the hormonal changes can affect the stability of their vision. The pupil of the eyes should be of adequate size. People with larger pupils may experience starbursts, halos or glares after a LASIK eye procedure. Sufficient corneal thickness is required to become a good candidate for the procedure. Eye professionals will find it difficult to create the corneal flap safely when the cornea is very thin and delicate. LASIK procedure cannot correct any refractive disorder. Patients suffering from severe problems should think about alternative methods like implants. All of this would be discussed in greater details upon your consultation with Dr. William Boothe.

If you are not the right candidate for the LASIK eye procedure, then there are alternative methods for curing the refractive errors of your eyes. LASEK is an alternative for LASIK eye procedure to treat the refractive errors. When the patients have thin corneas that are too delicate to create a corneal flap can undergo LASEK or PRK. LASEK otherwise known as Laser-assisted sub-epithelial keratomiluesis is the recent addition for correcting the refractive errors of the eyes. LASEK is proved same benefits as that of the LASIK eye procedure, but this procedure do not need to remove too much of tissue from the cornea as it is in the case of LASIK.

In LASEK eye procedure, thin epithelial corneal flap is created, but the recovery time required for LASEK is more than that of the LASIK eye surgery. The ophthalmologists usually choose the LASEK eye procedure to minimize the tissue used to create a corneal flap. LASEK does not require the use of microkeratome because the corneal flap is produced using chemicals which help to break down the adhesion between the tissue layers. After performing the LASEK procedure, the corneal flap is brought back into the previous position, and applies a protective shield. The recovery time of LASEK is shorter than the PRK.

PRK or photo refractive keratectomy is also an alternative for the LASIK eye surgery. PRK is good for patients having epithelial problems which make it impossible for creating a good corneal flap mechanically or chemically. In this procedure, the ophthalmologist will scrape some epithelia tissue manually or with the help of a laser. Both LASEK and PRK can be performed on only one eye at a time. Both LASEK and PRK have almost similar complications and side-effects. Both these procedures require some post-operative visits to the doctor than it is in the case of LASIK eye surgery.

Another great alternative for LASIK eye procedure is the implant of intraocular lens. For implanting the intraocular lens the surgeon will remove the natural lens, and replace it with an intraocular lens. Replacement of natural lens is effective in the case of patients with higher levels of refractive errors such as hyperopia. Conductive Keratoplasty is also an alternative for the LASKI. In this procedure, the radiofrequency energy is applied along the corneal periphery in a spherical pattern. The heat energy will make the corneal tissue to shrink which steepens cornea which reduces hyperopia temporarily.

The most popular alternatives which are being used for years are spectacles or contact lenses. Lenses are the most affordable method to correct the refractive errors of your eyes. In order to correct your refractive errors you can consider all the above mentioned options, if you are not the right candidate of LASIK eye procedure. Of course, LASIK eye procedure is the best among all the alternative procedures, but if you are not the good candidate for the LASIK, then you must go for the alternative to correct your vision.

Dr. Boothe - Lasik Eye Surgery: The Procedure

Posted by Dr Boothe on September 13, 2010

Lasik surgery is a very simple and quick (it takes just a few minutes) procedure. Many people have vision problems such as myopia, hyperopia or astigmatism that are caused by the strained shape of the cornea. Dr. William Boothe utilizes a state-of-the-art laser system with a screen and a microscope to remodel the corneal tissue of your eye so that you can focus your vision without glasses or contacts.

If you decided to undergo Lasik at the Boothe Eye Care & Laser Center, on the day of your procedure you should dress comfortably and come to the center about half an hour before your appointment.

Throughout the surgery, you will lie on your back and look at the laser, remaining awake. Dr. Boothe & his staff will put anesthetic drops in your eyes so that you do not feel any pain or discomfort. After that the surgeon will fix your eyelids open, he will cut a small flap in your cornea with a special Intralase FS laser system. When the flap is folded, you will be asked to look directly at a target light. Then the computer-controlled excimer laser will remodel the corneal tissue, correcting your vision. After that (a quick process, perhaps less than a minute per eye) the flap is put back. Every excimer laser system at the Boothe Eye Care & Laser Center has an eye tracker that ensures the highest precision surgery. The Lasik procedure usually lasts from a few seconds to a minute.

After the surgery, your eyesight will dramatically be improved in a few minutes. The corneal flap needs to heal adequately, so do not rub your eyes even if they are irritated - it is a normal temporary occurrence after the Lasik surgery. Dr. Boothe will give you eye drops, sunglasses and plastic shields, and will instruct you how to use them. You will need to wet your eyes every few minutes while reading newspapers or watching TV and avoid eyes make-up, athletic sports and swimming. Checklist before you decide to undergo Lasik

Posted by Dr Boothe on August 31, 2010

Lasik is a modern procedure used to correct vision problems such as astigmatism, hyperopia (farsightedness), and myopia (nearsightedness) utilizing a laser to remodel part of the cornea. Nowadays, Lasik is often regarded as one of the most common elective laser procedures. The Boothe Eye Care & Laser Center, which is situated in Plano, Texas, has been using this state-of-the-art technology for around twenty years to help people with refractive errors to correct their eyesight and to stop wearing vision correction devices such as eyeglasses and contact lenses.

But how do you get to know whether the Lasik procedure suits you? There are a few checklist items that are considered by Dr. William Boothe before allowing a candidate to undergo laser eye surgery:

- You must be at least 18 years of age.

- Eye diseases such as cataracts, glaucoma and conjunctivitis most likely will not allow you to undergo the procedure.

- Some eye abnormalities are almost impossible to be treated by the Lasik procedure. It will not be performed if too much corneal tissue has to be removed.

- Dr. Boothe emphasizes that your vision must be stable for more than a year. The Lasik procedure will not be able to correct your eyesight properly if your eyes vision changes every few months.

- Lasik will not be performed if you are pregnant. You must wait until the pregnancy is over because special hormones exude and affect the shape of your cornea in this period.

- You cannot undergo Lasik if you are infected with HIV or have any other disease (such as severe diabetic eye disease) that damages the body’s the ability to heal adequately.

- You have to be familiar with all the benefits and risks of the Lasik procedure before surgery.

Boothe Eye Care & Laser Center offers you a complimentary initial screening. This free procedure is aimed to help you determine if Lasik is right for you. Need more information? Visit BootheLaserCenter.com

What is the difference between Lasik and IntraLASIK?

Posted by Dr Boothe on May 29, 2008

This is an interesting question, mostly because IntraLASIK is Lasik. Lasik is a procedure where a flap is cut on the eye and then folded back. A laser is then used to reshape the eye and the flap is folded back into place. IntraLASIK does all of this with lasers, where as traditional Lasik used a blade. While the traditional version of lasik that used a blade is an effective procedure still practiced today, it is of some doctors opinions that the all-laser form, IntraLASIK, is a much safer surgery. With this added safety comes a cost though. IntraLASIK requires that a doctor buy the IntraLase laser to cut the flaps. Lasik Doctors are also required to pay more to use the laser, and this makes it a more expensive procedure to the end consumer. This is why, in my opinion, that many doctors still choose to use the traditional form of Lasik.

Dr William Boothe is one first lasik doctors in Dallas to see the benefit of using all-laser technology and is currently the most experienced all-laser IntraLASIK doctors in the world. Dr William Boothe has also done over 97,000 lasik procedures as of this date, and has a considerable amount of experience with this new IntraLASIK technology.
