Crystalens vs Multi-focal lenses like ReZoom and ReSTOR

What is an IOL?

I think that it is important to understand what an IOL is when comparing different lenses for your eyes. IOL stands for Intraocular lens. Wikipedia states this about IOLs

An intraocular lens (IOL) is an implanted lens in the eye, usually replacing the existing crystalline lens because it has been clouded over by a cataract, or as a form of refractive surgery to change the eye’s optical power.

Crystalens

So now we know what an IOL is, we need to start figuring out the difference. Crystalens.com says,

Crystalens® is the only intraocular lens that uses the natural focusing ability of the eye.

to gain range of focus, your eye needs to already have the ability to focus, or at least thats what this quote sounds like to me. When I look up presbyopia though, I found some interesting facts. Let me quote wikipedia once again.

Presbyopia (Greek word “presbys” (πρέσβυς), meaning “old person”) describes the condition where the eye exhibits a progressively diminished ability to focus on near objects with age. Presbyopia’s exact mechanisms are not known with certainty, however, the research evidence most strongly supports a loss of elasticity of the crystalline lens, although changes in the lens’s curvature from continual growth and loss of power of the ciliary muscles (the muscles that bend and straighten the lens) have also been postulated as its cause.

so crystalens could solve the elasticity problem of the crystalline lens by replacing it, but how does it compensate for the loss of power of the ciliary muscles? Dallas eye surgeon, dr william boothe, believes that multifocal IOLs such as ReZoom and ReSTOR give his patients much better results than crystalens.

ReZoom and ReSTOR

lenses like ReZoom and ReSTOR use multifocal zones to help the patient focus at multiple distances. Dr Boothe believes that these lenses are better for his patients than crystalens, mainly for this reason. He does not believe that crystalens gives a focal range as good as ReZoom or ReSTOR.
